Sell to a breaker’s yard in 4 simple steps
130,000+ cars handled across our nationwide breakers network
We’ve been in the motor trade for over 30 years, and we’ve built the most efficient way to sell your car to a breaker’s yard. Our platform handles everything: booking the collection with you, arranging delivery to the Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF), processing the payment, de-registering the vehicle and issuing your DVLA Certificate of Destruction.
Most sellers don’t realise just how much value is still left in an old or damaged vehicle until they see our offers. Our smart quoting algorithm breaks down the value of your car’s components to make sure you get the best possible deal. That extra few hundred quid can make a real difference.

Dismantle, salvage or scrap — we handle it ALL.
Scrap buyers aren’t after the car, they’re after the metal. That’s why we can give you a favourable price for your car no matter what condition it’s in. Whether it’s a Cat A, B, S or N write-off, a non-runner or a car that’s been absolutely wrecked, we’ll take it. We break down vans too, so we can even take a fleet off your hands if you're going electric or upgrading to newer models. Don’t even have an MOT? Not a problem. You’re not driving it, we’re collecting it.

The price we offer is the price we pay
Plenty of services will tempt you with inflated offers, then chip away at it with hidden fees once they’ve got you on the hook. Not us. Before we quote you, we factor in everything — collection, handling, dismantling — so there are no surprise deductions once you’re already nearly finished with the booking process.
Our pricing is fully transparent. You’ll get a detailed video breakdown that shows exactly what your car’s worth, part by part. That way, when you accept our offer, you’ll know exactly what you're getting and why.

FAQs on UK car breakers
What is a car breaker?
A car breaker (sometimes called a breaker’s yard or dismantler) is a business that specialises in stripping end-of-life vehicles for usable parts and safely recycling what’s left. They’re a key part of the vehicle recycling chain, and they’re licensed to handle the process legally and safely.
Are car breakers legal in the UK?
Yes. Car breakers are 100% legal in the UK, but only if they’re licensed and follow strict environmental and safety regulations.
To operate legally, a car breaker must be registered as an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) with the Environment Agency (or SEPA in Scotland, NRW in Wales, DAERA in Northern Ireland). This means they’re certified to handle, depollute, dismantle and recycle vehicles in line with the UK’s End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) regulations.
Can I sell my car to a car breaker?
Yes, you can, and in fact, that’s one of the easiest ways to get rid of an old, damaged or non-running car. When you sell through a platform like ours, you’re essentially being connected directly to licensed ATFs (many of which are also breakers) who want your vehicle for parts or scrap.
You just enter your reg and postcode, get a quote and choose a collection time. Once it’s picked up, you get paid and the car goes to an Authorised Treatment Facility. It's simple, legal and faster than trying to sell it privately, especially if it’s not roadworthy.
What parts can I buy from a car breaker?
You can get pretty much anything that’s still in usable condition. Engines, gearboxes, wheels, tyres, mirrors, bumpers, ECUs, door panels, seats, lights, if it’s removable and in good shape, a breaker will likely have it for sale.
A lot of people use breakers to find cheaper OEM parts for repairs or to source rare bits for older and imported models. Some breakers let you browse inventory online or call in to ask for specific parts.
It’s a great way to save money compared to buying new, and you're helping to keep parts in circulation rather than sending them to waste.
Do sports car breakers sell performance parts?
Yes, they do. In fact, many breakers either specialise in performance vehicles or have dedicated sections just for sports car parts. When you check their websites, you’ll often find categories like “Performance Parts”, “Sports Car Breakers”, or filters that let you search by make and model for brands like BMW M-series, Audi S and RS models, Subaru and Porsche.
Are car breaker yards cheaper than buying new parts?
Yes, definitely. When you buy parts from a breaker yard, you’re buying used or salvaged components rather than brand‑new ones, so you’ll often pay far less. In some cases, you can get used parts at around 50‑70% cheaper than new genuine parts from main dealers.
Do car breakers offer delivery for parts?
Yes. Some breaker yards that deal in used parts offer online ordering and national delivery. You might even get lucky and qualify for a next‑day delivery service for used parts if they have a nationwide courier available.
What do car breakers do?
When a car is no longer roadworthy, instead of crushing the whole thing straight away, a car breaker will dismantle it first. They’ll remove valuable parts like the engine, gearbox, catalytic converter, wheels, mirrors, electronics, basically anything that still works and can be sold on. These parts are cleaned, tested and resold to garages, DIY mechanics or exporters.
Once the valuable components are removed, the remaining shell is sent to be scrapped and recycled — in line with UK environmental regulations.
How do car breakers work?
Car breakers make their money by salvaging value from vehicles that aren’t roadworthy anymore. So even if your car doesn’t run or looks like a write-off, there’s still a business case for buying it.
Here’s how: when your car is collected and taken to a breaker’s yard, they don’t just scrap it for metal. They start by removing all the high-value components. Things like the engine, gearbox, alloy wheels, catalytic converter, electronics and even a working door mirror. They can clean, test and sell these on to garages, online buyers and exporters.
That’s where the profit is. The value of these parts can often far exceed the raw scrap metal price, especially for popular makes and models. So the breaker offers you a fair payout upfront (based on what they know they can resell) and makes their money back over time by parting it out.
Do car breakers pay cash?
Not anymore. Legally, they can’t. The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 made it illegal for any licensed breaker or scrap dealer to pay in cash. This was created in an effort to reduce vehicle crime and metal theft and making the process traceable.
So all payments must be made by bank transfer or cheque and in our case, it’s always a secure bank transfer. You’ll get paid on the day of collection and you don’t have to chase it. It’s all automated and confirmed by text.
Are there car breaker yards open today?
Yes, there are hundreds of car breaker yards open today, especially if you’re reading this on a weekday. Most yards operate Monday to Saturday, with opening hours typically running from 8am to 5pm, though some open a little later and close a little earlier on weekends. There are also hundreds of yards in our network open on Sunday.
Can I order car breaker parts online?
Yes, you can. Breaker yards increasingly support online parts ordering and delivery. That’s not something we facilitate outright through the Car.co.uk platform, but you can look up any breaker or ATF and see what they have for sale on their website.
Can I bring my tools to a car breaker yard?
Yes, you can bring your own tools, but know there are limits. Most yards allow you to bring hand tools or battery‑powered tools, but they’ll strictly prohibit heavy power tools, cutting/grinding equipment and lifting jacks.
Can I scrap a non-running car at a breaker yard?
Yes — you absolutely can scrap a non‑running car, one that’s failed its MOT, a write‑off or any vehicle that simply won’t move. All are perfectly acceptable for scrap at a licensed ATF. They handle the collection, paperwork, depollution and recycling.
If you’re using our service, we’ll take care of arranging pickup from your location even if the car doesn’t run, and we’ll guarantee everything is done legally and you get paid on the spot.
